Airport tilt

Date: Fri, Feb 15, 2008 Professional Internet

There's nothing I love more than making money in airports. Conversely, there's nothing I hate more than losing money in airports. I haven't figured out why this is, but it's always been like this. I think it's because I feel like I "shouldn't be playing," so if I win money, it's like found money. When I lose money, it's like I got robbed or something. Robbed by my own stupidity, maybe.

Anyway, I lost 12k just now in the Denver airport, and that includes winning a quads over quads hand for 10k. I played very badly, and didn't run so hot either up until the end. That pisses me off.

Anyway, I'll be in Santa Barbara till Monday and LA till Thursday. Blog ya later.

Trip Down Memory Lane + Good weekend

Date: Sun, Feb 10, 2008 Professional Internet

The end of this week was a great one. First I'll start with poker stuff, so you can skip here if you are a real life friend. I've been shipping it pretty good in poker this month. I'm up about 25k playing maybe 5k hands, I'm sort of pissed cause my pokertracker isn't working properly, so I've missed a few sessions that were great, I'm going to analyze a few in the CR HH replayer at some point. I feel as if the games have been quite good on Full Tilt lately, I'm not sure exactly why, but it seems like things have just been falling into place.

It's always interesting and fun when I get to play poker these days. There's always a new crop of young, hungry, successful online players looking to take the leap into the "elite" class of players. I mention this because most of them seem to care what people thinkof them a lot more than theplayers that are already "there," and that is something thathas always perplexedme. Why do people care if they are considered the best poker players or not? The only real reason tocare is for endorsementsor ancillary incomeearned from repuations (ie training sites, coaching). Someof these players arevery strong and I find it very rewarding to compete against a new group of players. It's REALLY hard to compete against players that are playing lots and lots of poker, and are always playing their best against you. I've done quite well for myself, all things considered, and I continue to try to stay one step ahead of some of the great young players out there.

One thing I am happy to report is that I feel that I am a better player now than I was a few months ago. It's been awhile since I could really confidently say this, but I'm certain of it now. For awhile, I was way too "stuck" in the way of thinking that has made me millions of dollars playing poker, and not really continuing to improve my game. Watching Cole's videos has really helped me think about the game a little differently, and I know I am a better player than I was a few months ago. My heads up game is still improving, and my 6max game has improved even more (comparitively speaking). I'll have to make a big stats post after I play a more signifcant sample of hands. I've also set a (private) very lofty (for me) personal income goal for 2008 and it's going to take more than CardRunners to get me there. Maybe I'll blog about it at some point, but I probably won't.

Now on to real life:

Andrew, J_V, and my roommate Mork went to Champaign to watch the UI/IU basketball game on Thursday. I won'tget into my distaste for Eric Gordon, IU, and the state of Indiana in general, but it appears I'm not the only UI grad who feels that way. Wow, this was a crazy trip.

I knew we were in store for a good night when some crazy fan came into our hotel and asked "IS THIS WHERE INDIANA'S BASKETBALL TEAM IS STAYING!??!?!" We were like...."WE HOPE NOT!!!" (as in...GO ILLINI!), and then he proceded to walk straight to the front desk and ask the same thing, then after being ignored he just walked down the halls looking for the players. He walked out briskly about 5 minutes later, and we all joked that we seriously wouldn't be surprised if this kid was looking to do something really stupid. Total wackjob, for sure.

We went to Papa Del's Pizza in Champaign, which is the best Pizza in Central Illinois and probably one of the top 3-5 places in Illinois. Longtime CR member epdog met up with us, and we finished a few pitchers of beer and some pizza. At 7 oclock, we packed into Brad and Erin's car (who met us there), and headed to Kam's. For those that don't know U of I, Kam's is one of the dumpiest bars in a very dumpy bar scene. It's usually packed and you can get good specials such as $1.25 high life bottles. I might as well throw in the fact that during my Sr. year of college, I don't think I ever paid for a drink at this bar. Andrew and I gave one of the bartenders/managers a free CR subscription in exchange for free drinks at this bar for a whole year. We would literally walk into this place and order 6 jager bombs and pay $2 for a tip. It was awesome.

At 745 we took the "party bus," which I should note is just a crappy old white van, to Assembly Hall. We were all feeling pretty good at this time, and thankfully our IU friends Brad and Erin weren't sitting with us so we could say whatever we wanted about the state of Indiana for a few hours (I kid hoosier members...i kid). Our seats were in the last row, which isn't a big deal at the AH because the place isn't too big.

The place was going crazy... I don't think I've ever seen it as loud as it was this game. Eric Gordon was getting booed like you wouldn't believe, and he reacted like I pretty much expected him to -- 3-13 from the field, a few TOs, lots of whining. He did manage to bank-in a 3 pointer which essentially saved Indiana, so I have to give him credit for that. In the end, we lost a 2-OT game by 4 points, so I freaking lost $20 betting on the Illini at +1 1/2. The game was unbelievably exciting though, and was possibly the best $50 I've ever spent.

Here is a picture I snapped on my phone, great scene:

Obviously we headed straight to the bars after the game. We got to Firehaus and met up with Epdog and durk86, 2 CR members, along with some friends of ours that still go to UI. It was a group of about 12 of us all around one big table, and we pretty much just kept ordering these $25 mini keg things as well as rounds of 10 jager bombs. This went on for 3 hours so by closing time we were all feeling good.

Dee Brown was back on campus for this game, it was cool to see him introduced before half time. At about 1 AM, he walked into the bar. I spotted him across the bar and a few of us just started yelling "DEEEEEE." He came over and was like..."what's up guys?" We were like...umm....we love you? He was very nice and shook all of our hands and thanked us for the support. Here is a picture of Dee and I:

After the bars closed, we went back to our friend Grady's until about 430 AM. We decided we were getting too old for this stuff about that time, and went back to our hotel. At 10am we got up to get breakfast, buy some illini gear, and go home. All in all, it was a great trip back to our old stomping grounds.

Friday night i was too hungover to do much, so after I got back from the office I just hung out with Melissa for the night. We drove to Wisconsin to meet my family at the Dells on Saturday night. We rented a 6 BR cabin and hung around for the day/night. It was a nice place, although I was sort of pissed that we didn't have any internet. I was in the mood to play some poker during the day when everyone was out hiking/swimming (I didn't have proper gear), but no internet was available.

Melissa and I drove home this morning, and I've been in the office all afternoon/evening playing poker and catching up on emails and work stuff. It's 845 now so I think I'm going to call this an entry.

PLOmahahah

Date: Wed, Feb 6, 2008 Professional Internet

Last night I wasn't feeling particularly well. I've felt stressed out lately and that's not something that usually happens to me very much. I decided to play a little bit of HU PLO on Full Tilt. I played for about an hour against a guy that seems to be a regular at HU. I lost 2 buyins to him at 3/6 after the super bowl, but I was playing completely horrible. I really sat down and tried to focus on the game this time, and I fared better this time. We played a relatively low variance match, where we only got it all in on the flop/turn probably 4 or 5 times in an hour. I ended out up about 1.5 BI's, which was okay by me.

Some thoughts on the session:

-It's cool to play a new game. One of my roommates walked by and asked "What are you doing??" He knows that hold'em has two hole cards and when he saw four he was confused. He also knows that I pretty much look for an edge in everything I do (within reason) and that is why I don't play a ton of games other than NLHE.

-It was really interesting to genuinely have no idea what to do in certain situations. I made some mistakes, and I think folding the button when reraised preflop is usually a mistake (help here?). My favorite part of PLO is that you can literally always represent a hand. If you don't play too crazily OOP, you can pretty much always get the guy to fold on Ax or Kx flops by firing a second barrel, as long as you don't overdo it. Also, reraising OOP with hands like AAxy KKxy can get you into some trouble, it's probably best to reraise more mediocre hands so that opponents can't bluff raise you as often when the flop comes 873 or something.

-I think I could become a great PLO player. In some ways poker is poker, and I have great natural poker instincts. In other ways, the games are very different, but I have always had great discipline and motivation when learning new games. I suspect I could beat most 2/4 PLO HU games, and probably up to 5/10 6max. It'd be nice to be a winning 10/20PLO player, so that I could either shortstack the biggest games when they were good, or fire up a few extra PLO tables when the NLHE action is dead.

-I think it's important that aspiring pros learn a couple games. I would recommend specializing in one game, but hten spending at least 1-2 days per week playing a different game. I think just using your brain in a different way (ie thinking about PLO instead of NLHE) will help you improve all of your games, as long as your are disciplined and objective with your decision making. For example, there are more playable PLO hands than NLHE hands in most situations, so you need to make sure you don't develop bad NLHE habits. I also think it's proper to play with a much lower AF in PLO than NLHE, where as in NLHE, it's almost never right to have a low to medium AF (let's say, <2).

Just some thoughts. It's been a tough week, I'm going to Champaign tomorrow with Andrew, Mork, and Justin (J_V) to watch the Illinois/Indiana basketball game. We're coming home Friday morning, then I'm going to Wisconsin with Melissa and my extended family. We rent a cabin up in the Dells one weekend per year and this is the weekend. It's nice to see my cousins, aunts, and uncles, so I'm looking forward to that. Next week I am headed to Santa Barbara with Andrew, cts, stinger, peachy, schneids, and ezra to stay at Brian's place for a few days. It should be a pretty fun trip, I'm looking forward to seeing Brian's house on the beach. There will probably be a lot of poker work to have done too, as we have two meetings in LA that monday. Finally, I am headed to Miami the wednesday after that for a long weekend with my girlfriend. We are staying at the Shore Club, which I'm told is a great place to stay, and are just going to try to relax and enjoy the beach/weather. I'll try to leave my laptop in my room as much as possible and just get some R and R.

I'll probably try to update this on Friday, but might not be back until Sunday. Until then, later.

CR Hand Replayer

Date: Fri, Feb 1, 2008 Professional Internet

Hey all,

We launched our Hand Replayer yesterday. You can read a front page news article about it here (EDIT: link broken for some reason, click the CR logo at the top and it's the first news story on the homepage), or click the HH Tools link at the top of this page to test it out. The feature that I really like is that it is extremely easy to search across all of your sessions for hands. It's nice to be able to watch a replay of how you've played a trouble hand, say something like a suited connector or whatever, over your last 20 sessions. Just looking at how I've played certain hands over time has shown me a few things about my game, which I won't discuss here :).

I'm more excited about this replayer because it will really help us with videos. We've got some exciting MTT additions lined up, as well as some cash game videos that should be a little different than our most typical formats. I'm also going to tool around with reviewing players hand histories in a video format, something that I think would be pretty beneficial as a video.

I'll try to blog a little more about my week later today, but I have to get some stuff done around the office. Have a nice weekend.

tc

Edit: I forgot to mention this, but it's pretty cool so I'll add it in. The Wall Street Journal called me yesterday to talk about a poker/finance story that they are doing. Hopefully I'll get a quote in there or something, we talked about poker, CR, finance, the future, etc. I'd feel honored to be quoted in the WSJ, especially after making such a tough career decision with regards to poker/finance. I sort of always wondered if I would be making a huge mistake and I think slowly over time I'm realizing that I'm doing just fine "on my own." Hopefully someday after this whole poker thing I can look back and appreciate what a crazy ride it has been.

It's that time again

Date: Mon, Jan 28, 2008 Professional Internet

Things are getting very hectic around here. It's not a bad thing, I like being busy, and we are accomplishing things, but I probably won't have the time to really put a lot of thought into my blog. I'll try to update things when I can, but it's just going to be a lot more difficult. I bought a new computer, a Macbook Pro, because my old one crashed this weekend. I like it so far, and I just got Windows up and running so that's good. I'm using the mac OS now so I can't format this blog how I would like to, so sorry about that. Friday night Emil, Ezra, and I went out to a nice Mexican place in midtown. I can't remember the name of it, but it was pretty mediocre for being expensive. Our waitress was very very attractive, but seemed like she could barely speak english and didn't really talk to us at all. We called it a night after dinner because we were all so hungover from the night before, so I was asleep by 1230. I came home to Chicago the next afternoon, Coop, Cherlyn, and Dawn picked me up from the airport and we headed to my condo. The 4 of us just drank some beers and hung out for the night, it was a lot of fun and pretty laid back. We were going to go meet some friends out in Wrigleyville but I was just too tired out from a hectic week. I'll try to provide a good update at the end of the week. I'm doing the twoplustwo pokercast tonight so hopefully that goes well! tc

Fun night

Date: Fri, Jan 25, 2008 Professional Internet

Ezra, Emil, David, John, and Jordan and I went to Tamarind for dinner last night. It was proably the best Indian food I've ever had, I really recommend this place. The Tamarind Margarita somehow tastes exactly like you'd expect an Indian margarita to taste, if that makes any sense. We had some great food and conversation, and best of all David got stuck with the bill.

We stopped by a lounge for a few minutes, but realized it was basically dead and you'd have to buy some bottles to sit down anywhere. This guy, Brad, who met up with us, is really big into the club scene so he recommended we go to tenjune, which supposedly is one of the best clubs in New York right now (note: I'm sure it will be passe by the time I post this). The guy at the door was just about as pretentious a guy I've ever interacted with, but since we were there early and the place was dead, they let us in if we promised to spend at least $1800 at the club. When writing this, it sounds a lot more ridiculous than it felt at the time. None of us (besides Brad) usually go to clubs, so we figured what the hell, it's a once or twice a year sort of thing.

This place was really cool. The atmosphere was good, they basically turned a warehouse into a relatively small underground club. Within 30 minutes of getting there, the place was absolutely packed. The guys at the table next to us owned some private jet company and had about 10 models with them, and Tiki and Ronde Barber (NFL players) were 2 tables over on the other side of us. As basically a bunch of lame online poker players, we didn't fit in all that well, but none of us seemed to care. We all got quite drunk and really had a great time. The atmosphere at this place was really electric, I can't remember ever being somewhere that felt quite like that.

There was one mildly funny story from the night. Right when the Barber brothers showed up, people started crowding around their table and such. Everyone was saying "OMG ITS TIKI BARBER etc etc." I thought this was sort of weird because this club is supposedly known for tons of celebrities and tiki is pretty cool but it's not like Brad Pitt was in the club or something. So I had to use the restroom so I headed over to that area. When I came back, the bouncer on the side of the club was like "what are you doing over here, you can't go in that area." I told him, "my table is over there, I have to go over there." He goes, "Oh, okay man, but TIKI BARBER is over there so you might want to go around the other way, it's crowded." I'm just thinking, my god, how is tiki barber this f'ing important???

We all felt like death today, so it wasn't very productive at all. We did get some stuff finished, so now Ezra and I are just relaxing before we go out to dinner tonight. I can't wait to get back to Chicago, New York is a lot of fun but i'm looking forward to going home and really getting back on a routine.

a busy and fun week!

Date: Thu, Jan 24, 2008 Professional Internet

Hey all,

This week has been pretty busy and productive. Brian came into Chicago on Sunday night. Much to his dismay, it was a balmy -1 for most of the day. It's always brutal stepping out of O'hare and realizing just how cold it is, I can't imagine what that is like for someone coming from Santa Barbara.

Sunday was supposed to be a day of catching up on some work and watching football. Melissa and I went out to brunch at Moonshine, then took a nap. After she went home, I started to catch up on emails and such. Well, then Jake, Beaumont, and Kramer came over (the latter two to do laundry so they brought some beers for us all). Drinking a couple of beers and watching football turned into getting another case and 4 of us playing beer pong in my kitchen for 3 hours. That turned into a bar, which turned into going to a strip club until 2am on a Sunday night. I'm not sure how that really happened, but when I woke up, I certainly questioned whatever decision making process we used.

Monday we had some interviews, then I went home to pack for New York. Brian, Andrew, Jed and I went to dinner at Joe's Stone Crab, which was very good. We accomplished a lot with this dinner, so I'm happy about that.

I woke up at 530 to get ready for my flight, which left at 8am. Well, traffic was HORRIBLE in chicago so Brian and I both missed the flight, which I've never done before. We got the 9am flight to New York, then met up with Ezra. We had some meetings to attend out here that afternoon, which both went great! I'm really excited about some of the stuff we have going on at CR, but I can't really openly discuss everything yet:(. Yea, I know, this blog sucks, etc.

Brian, Ezra, David (Gaucho) and I went to Churrascaria Tribeca for dinner. I'd been there before and it's pretty much the standard upscale brazillian steakhouse. Good stuff. The next morning, Brian, Ezra, and I filmed a video for CR that should be pretty educational and entertaining. Look for that to go up in the next couple of weeks.

Nothing of note really happened in the afternoon, I napped, Ezra and I went to the gym, then we killed some time around the APT. David, Emil (whitelime), Ezra and I went to get a massage at Madison Towers Spa. This place is so awesome, they really just work the hell out of your back, mine popped like crazy and I'm really sore today. After the massage, Ezra, Emil and I met Jason Strasser for dinner at Aurora. The food was pretty good, and it was cool to talk to Jason about his trading job. I'll always wonder how things would be for me right now if I was doing something like that, but for now I am very happy with the way things turned out. I think the fact that I am a curious person in general will always cause me to wonder "what if," but it's not like i dwell on things like that, mostly i'm just genuinely curious about how things would have went.

I've got some work to take care of this morning and afternoon, and then we're going out to an Indian restaurant tonight and then some lounge. Should be fun, I always have a great time in New York, I could honestly see myself living here at some point of my life. First I will need to obtain some money though, because I am undoubtedly the brokest guy in this city.

Moving out of the US

Date: Sun, Jan 20, 2008 Professional Internet

No, I'm not doing this anytime soon. I'm just wondering why more US online players aren't doing this, or at least taking extended trips abroad to play poker. If I didn't have CardRunners to worry about, I really think I would befriend some European poker players, and takea few month long vacations over to Europe to play poker 8 hours a day for 5 days a week. I don't talk to all that many European guys, but I have to imagine some of the games on the smaller european sites just have to be amazing right now. Poker is getting so popular in Europe (and elsewhere) that this just has to be something some people have considered or are doing. I'm just curious if any of you guys are doing this, or know people that are? Let me know!

Frozen. Plus: Memory Lane

Date: Sat, Jan 19, 2008 Professional Internet

My biggest complaint with Chicago is that it gets so unbearably cold in the winter. It's like 0 or colder right now. I had to wear my huge ski jacket to work today and it's like a 4 minute walk from door to door. It's too bad most of my friends don't really want to go out this weekend, all anyone is talking about is the weather so the small talk at the bars would be so easy tonight.

Andrew and I had a some media stuff to do for magazine/website partnerships today that we put off, so Ezra, you're welcome for coming into the office :). Also, we are going through interviews for two different positions and that should end this week, so we need to plan out how that process will work. There's just a ton of random bs going on, but we are starting to see some progress on things so I'm starting to relax a bit. I really feel like I have been way too stressed out lately, which is unusual for me.

Brian T (sbrugby) is coming into Chicago Sun-Mon this week for a meeting, then he and I are flying to New York for 4 days for some meetings. I'm going to stick around and go to Atlantic City for the Borgata 5k tourney on Friday with some friends. I hardly get a chance to see some of the hedge fund guys I met when I worked in NYC, so it'll be nice to catch up with them. David (gaucho) rented us a limo to head down to AC on Friday morning. It's pretty funny now that David works full time for one of them now, and he met them through me, and I met them through poker. It's crazy how poker has given the both of us opportunities we would never have normally had. For that I am extremely grateful.

I saw Matt Dean (of 04 WSOP Fame) on gchat today so I sent him an IM. I hadn't talked to Matt in probably a year. He and I go back to the old UB days of 03-04, and the two of us had an old blog with our mutual friend Lloyd. This blog was basically the beginning of CardRunners, it's unlikely I would ever have started CardRunners had I not received a lot of good feedback from people about our blog. There just wasn't any good information about poker on the internet back then, and for some reason we decided to start this blog. I never made a dime off it, and probably spent 20-30 hours or so writing articles, but I enjoyed it. I'll never forget coming home from class (my junior year of college) and having Lloyd IM me saying "Taylor, god damn it, write your blog entry, it's your turn." I remember just thinking, "comeon, there's a good 50-100NL game going right now, and I'm up X100k so far this semester, why do I have to do this???" For some reason I did though, and the popularity of that blog contributed to CardRunners eventually starting.

Matt and I talked a little bit about stuff, he's working for ESPN Radio in Houston, getting married this spring, and Lloyd is heading off to the Navy for some legal work (he's done with law school). Just a few years ago we were three kids who loved playing poker on UB, now we are all in the "real world" and becoming grown ups. Wow...

There are some funny quotes from this blog, I'll paste some in here:

Rant on Ultimatebet

First let me say that I have been a loyal UB patron for almost 3 years. I love their graphics, customer service, and atmosphere. If fact, no other site comes close.

However if UB doesn't implement Heads Up NL cash game tables above .25/.50 soon, or at least give me a knowledgable explanation why they don't exist, I am walking away. Even after numerous emails demanding these tables, UB has done nothing. In fact they almost play dumb. Here is a recent reply I got back from Antonio.

"Dear Mr. McGuire,
Thank you for contacting us. When looking at our games, I have seen several NLheads up that are higher than .25-/.50. We have SitnGos' with NL heads up of 20+1,10+0.50., 200+8. In the games sectionour no limits do appear to be of 0.25+.50. If you would like, I can forward your e-mail and suggest that the NL heads up atGames, not only the SNG's, should go beyond .50+.25. Please do confirm and Iwill gladly go ahead.
Best Regards,"
-AntonioCustomer Service

No offense Antonio but WTF is that? Am I supposed to be satisfied? Its gonna take more than a little magic to get me off your ass(only applies if you are Antonio the magician).

---

That's funny just because it was 2.5 years ago and people were alreadying complaining about UB being inept. Some things never change...

Here is our objective analysis of UB (next to our banner ad promoting them). Note: Guys, I thought we made ~$50 promoting UB... I don't think I ever got a cut.

Sorry to rag on you so much UB, but comeon. At least send me my damn Christmas present. UB calls me, asks me for an updated address because they value my play and want to send me a Holiday present. So I tell them the details and I'm like sweet, I can't wait (last year they sent a watch worth $750). Not only do they NOT send me anything, they've called me since then to try to get me to deposit more money. Comeon UB, you are killing me.

When there's a lot of stuff going on I hardly ever have time to blog. Around the holidays and other times (Vegas) when the work is a lot slower, there's always tons of things to talk about. My life has been extremely boring for the last week or so, just going into the office in the morning, leaving at 7 or so, going to the gym, coming home, eating dinner, and watching TV for an hour maybe. Not very glamorous.

This past weekend Coop, Mork and I went through a decent amount of beer just hanging out on Friday night. We went out to a bar that I think was called Chicago Tap, which was a dump but had $1 bottles on Friday night. I'll drink to that. The night turned into a complete mess by the time we got to an afterhours bar at 2am. The highlight of that bar was my friend Jake trying to hit on some really fake/tan girls by buying us all shots. They naturally asked "what are we drinking to?" I don't know why, but the conversation went like this:

Me: "Let's cheers to tanning!"

Them: "Excuse me? Did you just say tanning?!?"

Me: "Yeah, you girls do tan a lot....right??" (note: they were two of the most tan girls i've ever seen)

Them: "No! Ew."

Me: "Oh...ok...... CHEERS TO TANNING ANYWAY!!!" "HAHHAHAHAHA"

Them: "Ew, if you're looking to get laid...it's not going work"

Me: "I'm not."

I admit it this wasn't one of my finer moments. I wish I had pictures of these girls for blogging purposes. I'd also like to note that I'm usually not "that guy" that has these sorts of exchanges, but the best part was that these girls thought I was ruining my chances to take them home, when in reality I couldn't care less and was just looking to hang out with the guys.

Alright that's it for now. Oh, yea, CardRunners is hiring and we have 350 resumes for one of our openings (administrative assistant) Andrew had fun going through those today. Let me tell you that going through resumes from random people on the internet can be downright hilarious. I never expected to read some of the things I read today. Tip: Proofread your email/resume, don't have your email be SeXyChiC5678@whatever.com, don't title the email: YOU NEED ME, or TOP TEN REASONS WHY I WILL WORK FOR YOU. I could seriously go on...but don't do that stuff.

I'm going to predict the patriots lose this game today. To be fair, the Jags have it 3rd and goal already. Don't worry about flaming me though, I'll edit this if I'm wrong.
