Kinda let this blog die out a bit. Ended 2007 up about $300, or about 7.5 times my starting bankroll. I think I'll come back here about once a month to lay out how I've played, maybe post a couple of key hands.

I'm now a "real" money player on AP (home of the scandal). My goal for 2008 is to end the year with a bankroll of $1-3K.

So far, I'm down about $50....so not a great start.

As I type, I'm playing in a $0.60 turbo sng on AP (took fourth A6 vs T9o). Turbos are new to AP and my guess is I'm going to hate them. I like having time to play tight and feel out my opponents. The advantages of turbos - likely to attract weaker impatient players, you can win more per hour, it's harder to get outplayed.

The cons, as I mentioned, it's harder to get reads, you can't play patient poker and the big one, it's doesn't really reflect "real" poker in any way. It's good practice for quick structure sat. tournaments, but that's about it. It doesn't reflect regular tournaments or cash games in any way. Therefore, I don't think you improve much as a player grinding these things out. Also, they're very frustrating to play:)

Wow, long time, no post

Date: Mon, Aug 6, 2007 Internet

First, no, I have not gone broke. In fact, thanks to a lot of success in the Fulltilt fantasy draft, I now have $60 of free money on that site and apparently a free hat:) Not that I'm the baseball cap wearing type.

My AP money is still around $250. I haven't been playing much, focusing my energies on job hunting and, when it came to poker, the Full Tilt fantasy poker freerolls. I managed to cash in about 5/8 I played, cracking the top ten in a limit holdem event.

The top ten finish won me entry into a $10K winner take all event. Unfortunately, I couldn't catch a break and was bounced in 200th/320? place.

Since then, I've been playing some sngs, splitting my time between AP and Full Tilt.

I'm finding the competition on FT to be pretty weak, and the structure a marked improvement over AP, which I still believe has excellent structure.

Unfortunately, although I've cashed a number of time on FT, but have yet to take one down. I haven't been keeping track of stats but I feel I'm up about $15 or so after about 8-9 sngs.

Patience is really key, since the blind structure is pretty relaxed. Something I have to make some adjustments to.

I plan to put some more poker hours in the next few weeks. I'll be doing some AP sng updates in the next few weeks, and hopefully, get back to posting some hands/strategy stuff.

Big update

Date: Wed, Jun 27, 2007 Internet

Well after finishing my set of sngs, I've been taking a break from them to play some $2,000 freeroll tournaments that I keep qualifying for through Full Tilt's WSOP fantasy draft. So far I've cashed twice (21st) for $10 each time. I've been using the money to play in some double stacked $1.25 90 man sngs. They're a lot of fun. I'll get back to grinding out the $2.40 sngs soon enough, but I'm enjoying my break from them.

51- first - first, my QQ lost to Q2, then my AQ lost to Q8, but I made up for it when my A6 beat KK on the final hand.
52- fifth - A10 vs KQ
53- first
54- second
55- second
56- fourth - 22 vs 66 - better to push allin on flop in these situations
57 fifth 22 vs 66 - fuuuuck!
58 - third - very aggrovating game!! KK vs 89 loss - two pair on turn. And then I coud have tripled up with JJ but with
59 - second
60 fourth - guy who had been making some bone headed plays against me, made a good adjustment, checking top pair to me, I went allin with second pair and lost a lot of my chips. Oh well.

6/10 (33/60) up $13.80 ($59.40) $147.18

Against my better judgement, playing in a $1 tourney with zero sleep, since I have to be up for the next two hours anyway to go to the bank.

Now at $146.18

Managed to make 4/110. Good enough for an $8.00 payday. Went allin with 10s vs A6 - runner runner str8 naturally for loss.

Now at $254.18.

Played some cash games- cuze I'm an idiot - down to $236.23 - sigh....

61- seventh - AK vs 56sooted... still played very bad. Must focus on poker game.
62- second $3.00
63- first $6.60
64- fifth
65-second $3.00
66- seventh - AA vs QQ - he hit trip on flop, nothing I could do. Dunny thing was I couldn't have done a bitt job of telling him I had aces preflop. He raised, I reraised, he reraised again and I went allin - what did he think I had.
67- third - KJ vs QQ $1.20
68- second $3.00
69- third - totally card dead three handed!! Q2 best hand I saw in five orbits. $1.20
70- sixth 6s vs 10s

6/10 (39/70) (up $8.40) up (67.80) now at $247.03

So now I'm back where I started being cashing in the tournament and blowing a bunch of money on cash games.

81- second - A6s vs 55
82- seventh - JJ vs QQ
83 - fourth - QQ vs 99, allin on flop, 9 on turn. Followed by hitting middle pair on flop, betting out caller had AK and hit A on turn to take me out. So very bad luck.
84- third - 10s vs A2 - A on river - Just running bad.
85-ninth - KK vs A5 - I bet the pot on flop with my kings, he calls with his pair of fives on a 10 high board, turn is ace I go allin and he calls...sigh...
86-second
87- fourth K7 vs QJ
88-fourth - bad luck
89-fourth - A6 vs 77 loads of bad luck up to this hand...
90- sixth - guy bluffs allin pot on me, I call, he hits higher pair on turn, I bust...

3/10 (46/90) (down $9.60) (Up $54.00) $227.71

91- third - 22 vs 78. Don't know why you'd call with 78...but...hell, wasn't even sooted.
92- third - very tough table by the time it was three handed - crap shoot! Made a greta call to get there thouhg, so was happy. 98 vs QQ - was just hoping I was facing two overs...
93 - third AK vs QQ
94- fourth
95 - fourth - IDIOT forces me to fold with another guy allin. IDIOT flips over a pair of tens and allin guy makes pair of kings on river. I had him beat on river.

ROI - 27 per cent

1- third
2- first

Hit my year end goal early - $250

Date: Mon, Jun 4, 2007 Internet

1-sixth - K9 vs AQ, got down to like 260 chips early when QQ vs KK - ick. Then build back up to 1200 before losing AJ vs 77.
2-third K10 vs 55 - played pretty good.
3-eighth - AK vs QQ
4-first - man, do I have to play good to win these things.
5-first - same as above. Made a bad play with pair of sevens, but doubled up soon after and played well after that.
6 - sixth A6 vs AQ sb vs bb - he woke up with a hand. earlier played a pair of kings badly and my opponent was an idiot and got extremely lucky...
7- fourth A5 vs JJ sb vs BB
8-third JJ vs AJ lost a bunch of chips when I tried to bluff a flush draw board, then the ace on the turn - buddy had the ace AND the flush draw lost a couple of bets. The very next hand, I had A3 and got the flush draw flop, buddy min bet the flop and turn so I had to call. check check the river.
9- second - pair vs str8 draw after flop. Gets str8 on river.
10- first

(6/10)

Now at $207.17 (-$2.00 for tournament) Up $15.60
Spent $2 on Nl tournament. Finished 134/322 - ick. Made a bad call with AK vs AJ on a AJ8 board. Could have folded.
Played a second $2 tournament finished 30/331 for a $0.71 profit - woohoo! Got one hand AQ, for the first 5 levels. Got down to 750 and went allin with AA and got called by two players holding 10s. Easiest board I ever had to sweat.

Got short stacked again and went allin with 5s. Got called by AQ and doubled up. Soon moved to a table where the short stack moved allin against me in the BB with 35 suited when I held KK. That put me up to 5300 chips - enough to cruise into the money and then waited for a two cards J or higher or a pair. The cards never came for the next three levels and I was out when my JQ suited failed to improve against Kx.

Bankroll now at $205.88

11-eighth - trips vs flopped str8...shoulda folded..
12-first
13- third Q10 vs J5 - J on turn. I played very well. Just got unlucky in a couple of spots.
14-fifth - AK vs 99
Played the $0.50 tournament. lost quickly when KK vs 88 and guy hit trips
15-sixth 88 vs 99, had jacks twice and lost with them twice...
16-fourth 33 vs JJ
17-second - Guy was VERY good heads up player Q10 vs A4
18-first
19-first
20-fifth - 99 vs 10s - could have folded..

5/10 (11/20) $217.38 up $12.00 ($27.60)

21- four Q7 vs AJ - gotta tighten up a bit, was the short stack obviously, but still...
22-ninth - bad play...Flush and gut shot str8 draw...but still too early to make plays.
23-second
24-fourth K7 vs 55
25- third - 77 vs 99 - didn't have to go allin. Oh well.
26-first
27-third - 77 vs AQ
28-second AJ vs Q6 (trip 6s on flop) In the same game I lost KK over AA and AK vs 910 - allin preflop so second with a chance to win on final hand still pretty good.
29-first - kicked ass!
30-third

7/10 (18/30) $232.98 ($15.60)($43.20)

Will now play final $2.00 tournament reducing my bankroll to $230.98. Assuming I don't cash big, this is the final tournament I will play for a long time.

Lost around 113 place out of 306 - card dead!

Now at $2.30.98 Won't play another tournament until $500 or when I really need a break - then something big $5-10. Oh, I will play the $3 razz when i get to $300.

31-first
32-fourth - very terrible luck. Two idiots at the table made final four. Chip leader luckbox doubled up the other two shot stacks twice...
33-fifth - AQ vs 55 - played fine..
34-third
35-fifth - 99 vs 55...got runner runnered for the flush. Earlier same opponent got running 3s for quads against my fullhouse. Fortunately lost the minimum.
36- fifth - 77 vs A7 - sigh...
37- eighth - AQ vs AK - bad call...
38- first - finally - played better, but not my best.
39 - fifth A3 vs 99 - very shortstacked...could have folded...hard to say.
40- fourth - very bad luck/bad play with trips on board. Tried to suck in too much money and got beat by the flush AND played it off. Should have gone allin on the flop.

3/10 (21/40) $228.58 (down $2.40) (up $40.80)

41-third
42- second - AJ vs A4 - but made a very bad call earlier, AJ called allin against QQ..bad bad bad...but got back to where I was and almost won so..
43- fourth - AA vs JJ and QQ vs AQ and forced to lay down JJ when I was faced with an allin and a call - turned out to be 72s and 99 - could NOT win...
44- sixth - 99 vs AJ
45- first- came back from 95 chips with 7 players remaining to win!!
46- third -66 vs KJ
47- fourth - 94 vs Q9 - I hit the 9 on flop and go allin and he calls. Didn't have to go allin.. but guy was a loose maniac so hard to play it any other way.
48- sixth -A4 vs JQ - runner runner for the str8.
49-third - A10 vs Q9 - both hit a pair on flop,he hits nine on turn to bust me.

Very sick read on River

Date: Mon, Jun 4, 2007 Internet

Absolute Poker
No Limit Holdem Tournament
Blinds: t10/t20
9 players
Converter

Pre-flop: (9 players) Hero is MP1 with 6♦ 6♣
UTG folds, UTG+1 calls t20 (pot was t30), Hero calls t20 (pot was t50), MP2 folds, MP3 calls t20 (pot was t70), 2 folds, SB calls t10 (pot was t90), BB checks.

It's early in a sng and I'm trying to hit a set. I remember thinking how this must be my tenth time hunting for a set today, so I should be due.

Flop: 3♦ 10♣ 6♠ (t100, 5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero checks, MP3 checks.

The board is so not scary, that I don't feel I can get much value from betting here, so I check, hoping MP3 bets. He doesn't.

Turn: 3♣ (t100, 5 players)
SB bets t60, 2 folds, Hero calls t60 (pot was t160), MP3 folds.

I have a full house, and figure I'll call the 60 and punish the SB on the river. As I call I start to think about what he could have. If he had a 10, he probably would have bet it on the flop. I have two 6s so he probably doesn't have one of those.

I don't think he's betting a flush draw here. People who bet flush draws tend to try to represent something else when they bet them. Like a high pair on the turn. Here's there's nothing but the 3 - which got me thinking.

A 3 makes sense, since he would have no reason to bet out on the flop while more reason to bet the turn when the second three came off. The 60 bet into a 100 pot fits with a set of threes. So I figure him for possibly a 3 or nothing. This read is easier to consider when you have so many people limping into the pot at the start of the hand AND the fact that he's the SB. He really could have any two cards.

River: 3♥ (t220, 2 players)
SB checks,

Okay, so he checks the flop, bets the turn and then checks the river when the third 3 came off. He seemed happy about the 3 a moment ago, and now he's checking to me. If he has the fourth three, I'm beat. If he's as weak as he's trying to pretend he is, with such a scary board, why would he call anything I'd be interested in betting.

I decided I'm 80 per cent certain he has the 3 and 20 percent sure he's got nothing. In either case checking gives me the same pot as betting out if he has nothing and saves me a lot of chips if I'm right about the 3.

Hero checks.

Results:
Final pot: t220

SB won Total ($220) with Four of a kind, threes [3♠ 9♥]

About 5 minutes later, the SB read through the old hand history and was amazed I didn't go broke in that hand. Had I not been carefully thinking through the hand I could have easily gone broke. Instead I made a great read and saved some chips.

Good read on the river.

Date: Mon, Jun 4, 2007 Internet

I made sure I kept the hand history of his hand. Looking at it, I had to rethink what was so interesting about it. I think it's my play on the river I was impressed with. Normally, if I think I have the best hand on the river, I just go ahead and bet it.

Here, there's two problems value betting on the river. Check it out.

Absolute Poker
No Limit Holdem Tournament
Blinds: t50/t100
5 players
Converter

Pre-flop: (5 players) Hero is UTG with 8♠ 8♦
Hero raises to t300, CO calls t300 (pot was t450), Button folds, SB calls t250 (pot was t750), BB calls t200 (pot was t1000).

Whether I limp raise or fold pocket 8s UTG depends on my chip size, the number of players remaining, their chips stacks in relation to the size of the blinds, how they play and my recent play.

In this situation, the blinds were 50/100 and I was the short stack with 1730. The CO, who plays with me up until the river has 1960. This is very important.

Flop: 7♦ 3♦ 6♥ (t1200, 4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets t400,

At this point I think I have the best hand, but to bet 600 or 1200 would commit me to the hand. I decide to bet 400, thinking I'll get called by one of the draws out there. Being short stacked, I don't mind a bit of action here.

CO calls t400 (pot was t1600), 2 folds.

Turn: 9♣ (t2000, 2 players)
Hero checks, CO checks.

It was a fairly aggressive opponent I was up against so I felt if I checked, he'd bet, even if he was on the draw. Even if he's on the draw, I now have a open-ended str8 draw, so I'm probably not in too bad of shape.

River: 10♦ (t2000, 2 players)
Hero checks,

I now have my str8, but unfortunately, I've let my opponent catch a flush by not betting the turn. If I bet out, I'm only getting called by a better hand, so I check.

CO bets t700

A 700 bet into a 2000 pot would be pretty standard value bet in this situation.

I started to think about folding until I considered the size of my opponents stack and the size of my stack.

The 700 bet leaves my opponent with 560 chips and to call would leave me with 330 chips.

I've shown weakness on the turn and checked the river to him, so what makes him think I would call anything, especially a 700 chip bet. The more I looked at it the more I realized my opponent was begging me not to call the 700. So I took it one step further.

Hero raises all-in t1030, CO folds.
Uncalled bets: t330 returned to Hero.

I have no idea what he could have folded there. Possibly a big pair. Maybe even a poorly played set on the flop.

I'm not sure I played the hand the best way possible, but I think that's a good read on the river that my opponent was weak.

I may finally be done with $1.20 sngs

Date: Sat, May 26, 2007 Internet

So I finished my third set of 100 $1.20 sngs (for the purposes of this blog anyway).

I won $46.65 to increase my bankroll to $191.57 with a ITM percentage of 54 per cent and a return on investment of 39 percent.

My stats through 300 sngs are:

ROI - 30 percent (30,22,39)
ITM - 54 percent (57,51,54)
Banked - ($46.65, $26.40, $36.60) for $109.65 total.

I've decided to spend $6.50 on some tournament action, just for fun, and then hit the $2.40 sngs with a bankroll of $185.00. If I drop down to $100, it's back to $1.20 sngs. Hopefully I'll kick ass. Who knows, maybe I'll run up my roll on the $1.00 tournament circuit.:)

81- third - No luck three handed other than MY FIRST ROYAL FLUSH. AK vs AA and I get the flush on the turn and the royal on the river!!
82- eighth - KK vs QQ also lost AA vs 99
83- fourth - J10 vs AA - short stacked.
84- sixth A10 vs 88
85- sixth - AK vs KK
86- fifth - A7 vs 10s
87-first
88- first
89-second KQ vs 67
90- third 49 vs 69 - very short stacked.

5/10 (50/90) up $3.30 (up $45.15) At $190.07

91- eighth - 10s vs AA - player made a very weird play with aces - basically looking to buy the 60 in chips. Hard to read him as strong. Earlier lost to a four outer river against two opponents drawing slim
92- sixth - more crap luck.
93- second JJ vs Q8 queen on river.
94- first - heads up against some idiot. playing heads up against idiots usually takes a lot longer than playing against a solid opponent. I tend to play a lot more flops and limp a lot more against morons and beat them up post flop.
95 - sixth QQ vs 10s - 10 on turn...
96- third - crazy three way flop -Ks 6s 5d - I had As10s for the nut flush draw and got called by some guy with 65 for two pair and a guy with KK for trips. I didn't hit the flush and was out.
97 - fourth A7 vs Q10 - made very good read that I had him beat preflop - didn't work out though - hit queen on turn.
98 - fourth - get my second royal flush and still fourth 24 vs A4 - hit a four on 242 flop and figured I was probably good.
99- first - made a bad lay down to an allin but mostly made it cuze the guy who made the play was so bad, figured why risk going bust when I don't have too. On a spade flush flop, he went allin. I had A of spades so I knew he didn't have the nuts, plus why go allin on a flush board if you flopped the flush. So I was 90 per cent sure he had nothing with a 10 percent chance he had a flush draw or two baby flush cards. So I folded and he showned like 52 of diamonds. Loser. Anyway, us smart players knocked him out with back to back full houses.
100- fourth - 10s ran into AA - just bad luck four handed.

(4/10)(54/100) up $1.50 ($46.65) $191.57

ITM - 54 per cent. ROI - 39 per cent
