Tonight marks the beginning of my wife's birthday weekend. My wife has told me that she'd like me to take some time and play a bit of poker this weekend. So I'll probably hit the tables for a little bit over the next few days; however, I'm well aware that this could be a trap of some sort.
All kidding aside, I think I'll be able to put in about 1,000 hands. A few sessions of poker will leave me with tons of time to watch the kids and spoil my wife silly with gifts and fancy birthday meals. ...

I really don't have time today to discuss much of anything. I wanted to talk about the hands I posted yesterday but that's not going to happen today. Instead, I want you to take a look at the poker hand below.
I want you to guess what hand the Villain was holding at showdown. The results are in white so just highlight the text with your mouse when you think you've got an answer.

I took the night off from poker last night. And I didn't fire up the Xbox 360 either. My wife said I looked tired. I felt tired. I went to bed early and managed a more-or-less solid eight hours sleep for the first time in five years. And now that I'm fully rested, I'm ready to hit the tables pretty hard tonight! I've got bonuses to clear, a steadily improving poker game to nurture, and a real hankering sit incredibly still save for the slight clicking motion of my right index...

I got Poker Tracker 3 all set up last night. Although I was fairly happy with the PT3 as my one-stop session tracking tool, there were a few minor annoyances.
First off, there is a bug in the current PT3 version (Beta v15) that prevents the HUD from hiding the Hero's stats. It's very distracting (and useless) to have my lifetime stats show up in the HUD.
A second problem had to do with the inclusion of certain useless stats in my HUD and the exclusion of some fairly useful stats. The blame...

Poker's a funny game. One minute I love it, the next minute I couldn't care less about it, and then I'm right back to loving it again! I played a little over the weekend (about 1000 hands) and I'll be playing again tonight. I've got a couple hands that are representative of how things went at the tables over the past few days.
Poker and some other stuff after the jump.
First and foremost, I finished off Half-Life 2 over the weekend. Great game and scary as all f*ck!
I've actually...

My plans for the weekend are pretty simple: family, poker, and video games. And maybe a little beer too!
Speaking of beer, I've been doing pretty well with my diet: 21 lbs. lost since June 2nd and 35 lbs. lost since April. I'm still pretty husky but at least my gut doesn't hang over my belt quite so much anymore.
In terms of weight lost versus bankroll gained, my bankroll's definitely winning that fight thanks to a good month of July. I thought I'd be a little more hyped to play poker...

For all the bad that can occur when you're playing poker, there's always that chance to catch a big hand at the right time. Newer players to the game of poker will try and slowplay big hands in the hopes of "getting paid off". The sad truth is that you'll rarely get paid off unless your opponents have good hands themselves, though that's not always the case at low stakes poker.
That being said, I have a hand that I played the other night that shows just how easy and how valuable it can be to...

Although I stayed away from poker last night, I put my downtime to good use. I reviewed a number of the hands that I played on Monday night and spoke with a friend to sort out some of the questions I had about my session. We found a few things well done as well as a few less-than-stellar moves that I made in my session. The most important thing for me to do at this stage in the learning process is to identify those things that I do well and those that I do poorly. My hope, as always, is to...

Things are pretty busy today so I don't have time for a real post.
See my weekend update after the jump.
Here's what I did over the weekend:Broke my SNG winless streak on Friday night at PokerStars. I played seven SNGs: won one, came second twice, and lost the rest. It felt nice to take one down again!
My wife and I saw The Dark Knight! Very good movie. Was it the greatest movie of all time? No. But it was pretty damned good. My wife preferred Batman Begins; I liked both equally.
I...

July was a good month for me at the tables. Coming back from a self-imposed three month hiatus from poker, I put in some hours and was rewarded. I've been trying to think a little harder about the decisions that I make at the tables. I've found that playing a medium stack (100 BBs) has had a larger-than-expected impact on my game; my win rate has gone up, bankroll variance is down, and my game has improved. I'm still not where I want to be poker-wise but I'm pleased to see that I'm headed...

What goes up must come down. A valuable lesson in life and at the poker tables. As hard as I hit the flops a couple nights ago, last night proved to play out in quite the opposite manner. I knew I was in trouble when I found myself playing over 30% of hands at three tables all at the same time. My game plan relies on starting out slowly, building up a solid image that will allow me to steal big pots later in the session. But when I pick up a never-ending stream of pocket pairs and suited...

I was speaking with MJ on a coffee break yesterday. As usual, our topic of conversion was poker. MJ commented that he was getting sick of starting each of his sessions by dropping anywhere from a half buy-in to a full buy-in before finally picking up steam. Having gone through a similar stretch myself, I knew exactly what he was talking about. It's hard to get yourself psyched to play only to sit down and instantly find yourself down for the night. Poker is always interesting - but it's so...

I wanted to post a couple hands today that display some of the weird plays that I've seen from some of my opponents over the past couple weeks. We've all heard that online poker games are getting harder but I think playing winning poker is just a matter of adjusting your game to changing table conditions. If you've read the same books and watched the same videos as your opponents, all you need to do is change up your game to exploit all that your opponents perceive as gospel.
Sometimes this...

I didn't really play that much poker over the weekend. I was looking to clear between one thousand and fifteen-hundred hands but only managed six hundred hands. I was a little too tired to play and took the opportunity to spend some extra time with my wife. I also made a small purchase yesterday afternoon...
After visiting my local FutureShop on Saturday and looking over the various portable video players available, I came to realize that very few offer the features available on the...
