Weekend!

Date: Fri, Aug 8, 2008 Internet

My plans for the weekend are pretty simple: family, poker, and video games. And maybe a little beer too! Speaking of beer, I've been doing pretty well with my diet: 21 lbs. lost since June 2nd and 35 lbs. lost since April. I'm still pretty husky but at least my gut doesn't hang over my belt quite so much anymore. In terms of weight lost versus bankroll gained, my bankroll's definitely winning that fight thanks to a good month of July. I thought I'd be a little more hyped to play poker...

Hand Quiz: Betting the River

Date: Thu, Aug 7, 2008 Internet

For all the bad that can occur when you're playing poker, there's always that chance to catch a big hand at the right time. Newer players to the game of poker will try and slowplay big hands in the hopes of "getting paid off". The sad truth is that you'll rarely get paid off unless your opponents have good hands themselves, though that's not always the case at low stakes poker. That being said, I have a hand that I played the other night that shows just how easy and how valuable it can be to...

Is Tight Always Right?

Date: Wed, Aug 6, 2008 Internet

Although I stayed away from poker last night, I put my downtime to good use. I reviewed a number of the hands that I played on Monday night and spoke with a friend to sort out some of the questions I had about my session. We found a few things well done as well as a few less-than-stellar moves that I made in my session. The most important thing for me to do at this stage in the learning process is to identify those things that I do well and those that I do poorly. My hope, as always, is to...

Weekend Update: Dark Knight, Half-Life 2, and Poker

Date: Tue, Aug 5, 2008 Internet

Things are pretty busy today so I don't have time for a real post. See my weekend update after the jump. Here's what I did over the weekend:Broke my SNG winless streak on Friday night at PokerStars. I played seven SNGs: won one, came second twice, and lost the rest. It felt nice to take one down again! My wife and I saw The Dark Knight! Very good movie. Was it the greatest movie of all time? No. But it was pretty damned good. My wife preferred Batman Begins; I liked both equally. I...

Month in Review: July 2008

Date: Fri, Aug 1, 2008 Internet

July was a good month for me at the tables. Coming back from a self-imposed three month hiatus from poker, I put in some hours and was rewarded. I've been trying to think a little harder about the decisions that I make at the tables. I've found that playing a medium stack (100 BBs) has had a larger-than-expected impact on my game; my win rate has gone up, bankroll variance is down, and my game has improved. I'm still not where I want to be poker-wise but I'm pleased to see that I'm headed...

What's the Opposite of a Monster Session?

Date: Thu, Jul 31, 2008 Internet

What goes up must come down. A valuable lesson in life and at the poker tables. As hard as I hit the flops a couple nights ago, last night proved to play out in quite the opposite manner. I knew I was in trouble when I found myself playing over 30% of hands at three tables all at the same time. My game plan relies on starting out slowly, building up a solid image that will allow me to steal big pots later in the session. But when I pick up a never-ending stream of pocket pairs and suited...

Monster Sessions

Date: Wed, Jul 30, 2008 Internet

I was speaking with MJ on a coffee break yesterday. As usual, our topic of conversion was poker. MJ commented that he was getting sick of starting each of his sessions by dropping anywhere from a half buy-in to a full buy-in before finally picking up steam. Having gone through a similar stretch myself, I knew exactly what he was talking about. It's hard to get yourself psyched to play only to sit down and instantly find yourself down for the night. Poker is always interesting - but it's so...

The Learning Process

Date: Tue, Jul 29, 2008 Internet

I wanted to post a couple hands today that display some of the weird plays that I've seen from some of my opponents over the past couple weeks. We've all heard that online poker games are getting harder but I think playing winning poker is just a matter of adjusting your game to changing table conditions. If you've read the same books and watched the same videos as your opponents, all you need to do is change up your game to exploit all that your opponents perceive as gospel. Sometimes this...

Zune State

Date: Mon, Jul 28, 2008 Internet

I didn't really play that much poker over the weekend. I was looking to clear between one thousand and fifteen-hundred hands but only managed six hundred hands. I was a little too tired to play and took the opportunity to spend some extra time with my wife. I also made a small purchase yesterday afternoon... After visiting my local FutureShop on Saturday and looking over the various portable video players available, I came to realize that very few offer the features available on the...

Another Leak

Date: Fri, Jul 25, 2008 Internet

True to my word, I put in a session at PokerStars last night. I finished up on the night after putting in close to 400 hands. It wasn't my smoothest sessions. Over the past few days, I've noticed a disturbing trend in my game that's costing me money. It's not quite fancy play syndrome but it's definitely in the same ballpark. After I've scouted out the tables a bit, I'll generally put myself on the waiting lists for the tables that I feel will give me the best chance of padding my...

The following is a paid advertisement for OnlineCasinosDir.com. With the weekend fast approaching, many of you will make the trip out to cottage country or some backwoods campgrounds. But if you're like me, the weekend means one thing: relaxing at home. I like to watch a little TV to unwind or maybe fire up the old Xbox 360. There are also times when I like to relax by doubling down on my 8♣ 2♥ against the dealer's 6♠ upcard. I'm not the only online poker player known to pop over to the...

Plugging Away

Date: Thu, Jul 24, 2008 Internet

I put in a short session of about 270 hands last night. I played one hand terribly - really, really terribly. I'm a little too ashamed to post it at the moment but I'll see how I feel in a few days. That terrible hand cost me 3/4 of my stack and a good chunk of my self-confidence. The session wasn't all doom and gloom though. I managed to make back all my losses with a couple big hands. I could have made a little more on top of that had I not run a little unlucky with some all-ins. But I...

Whatever...

Date: Wed, Jul 23, 2008 Internet

Have you ever had one of those sessions where nothing went your way? Pocket pairs fail to hit sets? Your pre-flop raises get shoved back in your face with large and frequent 3-bets? Continuation bets get called, raised, or check-raised? And above all else, very few of your hands connect with the flop, forcing you to make a choice between bluffing for stacks or sheepishly folding? I just had one of those nights and it sucked. There really wasn't much I could do last night. I wasn't getting...

When I started playing online poker a few years back, I didn't really know what I was doing. I saw an ad on TV for a poker room and signed up later that day. I knew nothing about the poker room when I fired up my first table. I didn't know that there were trusted poker rooms that offered a better experience for its players. I knew nothing about bonuses. I knew nothing about deposit methods. I jumped into the water head-first without first checking the water for rocks or sharks. Things...
