WSOP trip with StoxPoker

Date: Thu, Jul 10, 2008 Professional Internet

I decided to join all the StoxPoker guys in Vegas for a week to help out a bit at the WSOP convention. Nick and Jim (CEO) were planning to have a big booth displaying the website. In reality the convention could have been in Iowa for all I cared. I really just wanted to meet all the guys, hang out, and shill my ass off for a website I owe much of my success in poker to.

StoxPoker has been such a huge influence on me, even before I was a coach here. I was a paying member back when Nick just released a video or so a week, and that was it. His early videos really taught me a lot and stressed some concepts that were lacking in my game. I must have gone back and watched those videos a 100 times each. Then, Leatherass started posting videos. At first, I just didn't get his style. Over time, I grew to love it, and now think of him as my biggest influence in poker. I've taken so much from his teachings.

After arriving at the house Monday evening, I was greeted by Jared, Kyle, Digs, Jade, Ed, and Jim. We all piled into the rental mini van and went to dinner. Through the evening we were slowly joined by Hunter, his wife and brother, Nick, Dusty and his wife, Action Bob, and Bryce. I may be forgetting someone, if so I apologize but it was quite overwhelming. Bryce was one of the stragglers, and his arrival was a bit comical. He entered the restaurant, and immediately had to borrow money for his taxi fare. I was thinking "here is arguably the best limit hold'em player in the world, semi-retired at 23 yrs old, set for life, and he doesn't have any American currency on him". Quite a funny first impression. After the dinner we all went back to the house and drank a few beers, chatted, and finally called it a night.

In hindsight, the days seem to run together so all the happenings may be slightly out of order from this point forward. I'm sure I will accidentally leave out a bunch of awesome stuff in this blog, but I'll do my best to hit the highlights. The first day of the WSOP expo I wasn't scheduled to work the booth, so I slept in. Then I headed over to the Venetian for a little side game action. I only played about 3 hours, before quitting so I could join everybody at the Rio for dinner. No real fun hands occurred during the game, and overall I felt bored playing 10-handed. That night Jared, Bryce, Ijay, Kyle, and myself went to dinner at the Wynn, We then met up with Jade, his girflfriend, and Digs. We all caught a show called "La Reve". It wasn't really my taste. I think the only one who liked it was Bryce.

We all worked quite a bit at the WSOP StoxPoker booth. I thought it looked really great, and stood out from many of the other booths. Of course the Man vs Machine match definately helped to draw some interest. All the guys from the University of Alberta were real nice, and I enjoyed talking with them throughout the week. They really put in a lot of hard work, and deserve a ton of credit.

We had two booths, one was just StoxPoker, which had prime location. It was the very first booth people saw as they entered the venue. The other booth was shared between StoxPoker, Two Plus Two Publishing and Poker Tracker 3. While at the the secondary booth I got the opportunity to speak one-on-one for a solid half hour with Dan Harrington. He really had a lot of questions for me about online play. We went over certain PA HUD stats, and overall just had a very nice conversation about poker in general. It was pretty surreal having Dan Harrington asking me questions about poker. It should certainly be the other way around. He, and Bill Robertie were nice enough to sign a copy of HOC Vol. 2 for me, which I can't wait to read.

The night that was most interesting was certainly the party at Dusty's super nice suite at the Palms. Everyone from StoxPoker came. Also in attendance were Action Bob, Geoff "Zobags" Herzog, Sunny Mehta, Digs, mbolt1, etc. We all had a blast. Dusty and his wife, Nicole, ordered a ton of beer and liquor, as well as food, which room service brought up. It was quite apparant that the whole party really enjoyed themselves. At some point in the night mbolt1 decided to stake Ed in blackjack. Hunter, and his wife, Kyle, Digs, Zobags, and myself all stumbled downstairs to watch the degeneracy occur. mbolt1 is a crazy dude, and sure does have some big gamble in him. It was pretty damn entertaining to watch. Earlier in the evening he and I were flipping for money. I had him stuck about $400 or so until he got back even on a double-or-nothing. Dusty quite enjoyed watching his horse, mbolt1, take a beating while flipping. After the blackjack debacle, we hit the craps table even though no one had much of an idea how to play. Somehow everyone ended up making money though. I'll credit Kyle for that. Since he runs good at poker, he might as well run good at table games.

Throughout the week I was subjected to much poo flinging limit hold'em talk between IJay, Bryce, Nick, Kyle, etc. It made my ears bleed... just kidding, just kidding. Even though I don't play any LHE, I still found it totally fascinating to hear all of the talk between such great limit hold'em minds. I just wish Leatherass and Hunter would have stayed at the Stox house, instead of a hotel, so the NLHE guys could have evened the odds a bit.

In all it was an exhausting week for me, but one that I will certainly cherish. Meeting all of the StoxPoker guys was incredible. Everyone was so nice, and I couldn't imagine a better group of poker players to spend a week with.

Man vs Machine HHs are Now Live

Date: Thu, Jul 10, 2008 Professional Internet

Hand histories from the MvM are now up at: http://www.stoxpoker.com/mvm/live-mark-ijay

One thing which is cool is that, due to the duplicate format you get to compare how the humans play their hands as compared to Polaris. This may also be pretty sweet if you play HU LHE in that you get to sweat me, Newhizzle, Stoxtrader, Hoss, Doughnutz and a lot of other mid-high stakes winners. Please note that Matt has requested that we edit out folded hands from his match. Also, we've got a video from my match uploaded and will be adding plenty of similar stuff over the next few days.

Some may also be interested in checking out Matt's pre-match interview about the MvM here: http://twoplustwo.com/magazine/issue43/paradis_0708.php

You can also check out the 2+2 Pokercast wherein myself and Nick discuss the MvM here: http://pokercast.twoplustwo.com/pokercast.php?pokercast=31

Moneymaker

Date: Thu, Jul 10, 2008 Professional Internet

I just wanted to do a quick blog about how impressed I am by Chris Moneymaker. Not as a poker player per se -- though at least as far as LHE is concerned I think he's quite good and that he seems to get a really bad rap about his abilities -- but just as a good guy.

I used to play a fair bit against Chris on Stars. When we did, I'd chat with him and he always seemed like a nice guy. So last week at the WSOP when he was signing autographs at the booth next to our stoxpoker booth I went over to introduce myself and say hi. Unfortunately, it turned out that he had lost his voice. I told him who I was and he seemed to recognize the name, but I obviously couldn't have any kind of conversation with him. I was a little disappointed, but what can you do, right?

Then yesterday I'm playing on Stars and Chris shows up at one of my tables. He says hi to me and apologized for not being able to talk last week, but said that it was nice to meet me and put a face to the name. He wished me luck and then left.

I'm not a big fan of people in general; my experience is that most are mean or selfish or lazy or worse. "Famous" people for the most part seem even worse. So for someone as busy as Chris, especially right in the middle of the ME, to take 2 minutes out of his day just to say hello like that really impressed me.

$100k+ after Super-Tough Day 2

Date: Thu, Jul 10, 2008 Professional Internet

Well I wish I could say I had 2.5x’d my stack some other way, but the bottom line is that I pretty much sucked out on two really big pots. Don’t get me wrong, I think I played a really solid game and always picked good spots to get my chips in. But here’s how things went down.

First I arrived at the table to have seat #9 tell me he had read my blog about day 1, and seat 1 told me he had watched my videos and stuff. So the metagame started early! They were actually very nice guys, Peter and Andy, as well as tough players. In fact, there seemed to be five tough LAG’s to my left for most of the day.

First big hand, it’s folded to me in the SB with AKo. Blinds 300-600, I make it 2200, he 3-bets to 7200, and I shove in my remaining $42k or so. Insta-called by KK and turn comes A. Hurray!

An orbit later I’m in the BB, MP LAG makes it $2k to go. Button calls. I look down at QQ in the BB at make it $9400. MP shoves another $14k or so, button folds. Gotta call, right? So I do and he slowrolls me with aces (“What you got?”). Well after I flopped a set I kind of forgave the slowroll as he took the walk of shame.

One hand I raise 22 on the CO and get 3-bet shoved by Andy in the SB. These are the decisions that I specialize in with an SNG background (short stacks baby!), and I called for a slightly +EV spot getting 3:2. He flipped A8 and took it. Another hand I’m UTG during 400-800-100 and raise to $2200 with AdKd. Andy 3-bets to $6200 or so, and then this wild Brazilian dude 4-bets to $30,500. This guy was out there … earlier he 3-bet Peter pre-flop, and then made a really big overshove at the flop when he got led into on a three middle card board. Peter eventually folded and the dude flipped a random gutshot bluff.

So back to the Ad Kd hand … at this point I had well over $100k, and I just wasn’t able to pull the trigger. I guess he might have folded JJ or AQs, sometimes I’m racing against QQ, and the rest of the time I’m screwed against aces or kings. Who knows…

I also played the last level of the day with the guy whose been on ESPN before who plays entirely with one foot. While I really admire what he's able to do, he didn’t play well IMO. First hand at the table UTG limps $1200, button shoves $16k or so, and he flat-calls in the BB. UTG folds and he flips Kc Qc.

Anyway it’s 2:30 am here and I’m playing again in 9 ½ hours, so it’s off to bed. Tomorrow we play to the money, and hopefully I can be one of Gus Hansen’s "regulators" at the bubble :)

WSOP Final Update For Me

Date: Thu, Jul 10, 2008 Professional Internet

Well, I went busto about 90 minutes into Day 2 unfortunately. It was just as well because I pretty much hated playing the tournament and to top it off I got sick about 36 hours before day 2. I feel pretty congested and have a sore throat and the whole works. So when I went bust today I didn’t even really care as I just wanted to go back to my room and relax/sleep. The competitor in me obviously wanted to do well, but other than that I just don’t find playing live poker for serious to be much fun.

Day 2 started poorly with none of my steals working and not getting action when I did have something. I ended up busting out of the tourney when I got it all in preflop with KK vs. ATo and the guy turned a straight….sigh. It was just one hell of a boring tournament. I never even played a pot worth over 5k chips in the middle except of course my bust out hand versus a somewhat loose call with Ato. It just is what it is though. It sucks to bust, but it also is going to be nice to get home and play some cash games online again.

When I do get back home I will have some pretty cool pics to post in my blog. There are tons of pics of my penthouse suite as well as of the Stoxpoker party. I think there are also some of the Poker Stars party which was pretty sick. I saw a lot of pretty well known people there and saw Barry Greenstein in the VIP area as well. I figured he was little, but I didn’t know he was that tiny. He looks like he’d blow away in a stiff wind…lol.

Anyway, I think I am getting a bit delirious on these cold medicines. I should probably take a nap or just outright go to bed for the evening. I played a little bit of 6 max yesterday and today and was able to win 11k points in just a few thousand hands so I’ll take it. I may do some of that tonight, but I probably shouldn’t.

Matt Blogs the WSOP: Touching Base

Date: Wed, Jul 9, 2008 Professional Internet

I'm sorry I've been silent in this space since my final table. To be perfectly honest, I've never been more exhausted in my entire life than I was after those six straight days of long hours of poker that culminated with my sixth-place finish in event 51. I rested for two days before I had to play the main event, but I hadn't totally recovered and felt feverish and dead-tired through most of Day 1C.

The good news is I've had three days off since then, and I've been sleeping a ton, and I finally feel great. I go into Day 2B today with 66,475 in chips, safely above average, for now. That could, of course, change in an instant.

I'll be updating my chip stacks on FTSweat, and I promise a long WSOP post when I eventually get finished out here. For now, I'm just trying to focus on my routine, and my game. Wish me luck.

Up to $40k+ after Action-Packed Day 1

Date: Mon, Jul 7, 2008 Professional Internet

My strategy going into the main event was to play very tight pre-ante, and then really amp it up post-ante. I did this, and yet I still managed to lose around half my chips during the early levels.

First a quick note on my table. Across the table from me was bracelet winner John Esposito, who played a very solid semi-LAG style. Three to my left was Sully Erna, lead singer of Godsmack, who played ultra-tight. There was a young hyper-LAG kid to my right doing some crazy chip tricks, a loose-passive weak player, and a few standard TAGs.

OK hand I got in trouble early. Folded to me on the button with As Kh. I raise to $300, SB folds, BB 3-bets to $850. It's still early so I don't know much about him. Nonetheless AK seems like a strong enough hand in a BSB confrontation to 4-bet, so I make it $2600 to go. He calls.

Flop: 8s 3c 4c

He checks, I c-bet $3800, he raises to $9200, and I fold.

By $150-$300 blinds I was down to $10k when I moved all-in during the following hand.

I raise to $750 from MP1 with AQo, Esposito calls on the button, as does the LAG SB kid. BB folds.

Flop: 8c 9s Qc

(I have no clubs.) SB checks, I bet $2k into $2200 pot, both call.

Turn: 4h

SB checks. I have $8k and pot is $8k so I shove. Esposito folds, SB tanks and folds. I think he was making a straightforward odds decision rather than posing. Both of those guys read me as a nit, which is cool if you know that that's how you being perceived and can adjust to that. If one had a made hand at the flop they probably would've raised right then, rather than risk me getting scared away from a possible overpair when a T, J, or club hit the turn.

After the dinner break, I doubled up quickly. Everyone folds to me on the button, and I make it $750 with Tc Kc. Asian kid in SB 3-bets to $2k, BB folds. We're around $14k deep and I'm priced in to see a flop, for sure.

Flop: 9 T T

Bingo! He bets $3400, and I wait for awhile before raising all-in. I thought he would read this as being weaker than a smaller raise or a flat-call, and I guess I was right ... he insta-called and flipped AK.

Hurray.

I accumulated a lot of chips post-ante just making small raises pre-flop, winning a number of hands immediately or with a post-flop c-bet. I was only given one outright gift, which was when it was folded to me on the button, and I looked down at two black aces. Heh heh. I made one of my normal goofy raises to $1050 (blinds of $200-$400-$50a), and the SB 3-bets me to $4k. He has around $28k and I have him covered. If I flat-call we have an SPR of 3.5 which is decent for aces, but I didn't want to take a chance letting some random suited connector hand out-flop me. So I 4-bet the guy, and he folds quickly showing ... nine-five offsuit!

And then he's like, "Aww man, what can I do with cards like these?" And I'm thinking, "Well you could fold them..."

Then with around 90 secs left during the last level I'm UTG and take my sweet time deciding what to do with Th 3c ... I mean, I don't really want to have to post another blind! But after I fold with around 40 seconds left everyone folds quickly -- and I think they were bitching about me, but I was totally in glasses-Ipod-hat world. So I post. Everyone folds to the button, whose been TAG and has a stack of $9000. He raises to $1200, and I'm thinking "hmm, does this guy really want to risk his tournament when he could fold and be in day 2?"

When I saw ATo I decided to find out, so I made it $4200. This was a clever move but a poorly-sized raise, since if he 4-bet shoved I'd have a pain-in-the-ass PO decision. Fortunately he hemmed and hawed but ended up folding. But check this out -- the guy says "I should have just shoved," and Esposito, who is most definitively not in the hand, pipes up and says "Well you still can" and laughs.

And he had already been warned by another player for talking about a hand he wasn't in! That's messed-up IMO. But it was cool in the end because the guy folded and with that, I ended the day at a nice $40k+ in chips.

I'm playing again on Wednesday and definitely intend to bring my A-game, so wish me luck :)

Man vs Machine, Day 4: Final Showdown!

Date: Mon, Jul 7, 2008 Professional Internet

So today was the final day of MvM and also the final day of booth-hocking. The free DVD plus 24 hour website pass handouts did very well, and most people were pretty excited about the product once we described it to them (we probably gave away well over a thousand DVDs, maybe two). Without the giveaways, which were actually a last-minute addition, we would have stood around looking pretty silly, I think. As is we had one of the busiest booths at the con, which was great.

The Discovery Chanel and CBC came out for today's finale and spent some time getting input from IJay and Matt before the match. I've never met Matt face to face before, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. As it turns out he's a very personable and well-spoken guy, and he did great with the media. During the match he put on a great show for us, taking time to be talkative about hands and discuss things with the interviewers, which got a pretty big crowd going. I joked with a few people that while All In magazine, which was one booth down, had some impressive booth babes we had a poker robot and a team of computing science graduates, which was far sexier. It was also neat to be able to sweat the majority of Matt's play from the sidelines.

Matt finished his side of the match about 30BB in the hole. We then brought IJay's last 100 hands down from upstairs (where he'd played his side of the duplicate separately) and gave him the mic as he commentated on the replay. To our surprise he was stuck somewhat with 100 hands to go, and Polaris finished up about 15BB on him, which was the first time we had a substantial double-loss for a team in the duplicate format. That brought the record to 3-2-1 for Polaris after the final match, giving Polaris the tournament win. On the whole I have some conflicting reasons to root one way or the other on the match, but I think it's great that the CPRG is probably going to get a lot more recognition for their work as a result of this. They definitely deserve it.

After the match we did some wrap-up interviews with Discovery and CBC and packed up the booth. Joe Cassidy stopped by the booth to chat at one point and I think Stosh made a smart-ass remark about starting a 3-handed LHE game. A large number of people, including Joe, have expressed an interest in playing against Polaris, and my guess is that the CPRG will be running quite a number of remote matches with teams of humans over the next couple months. We ran over to "9" at The Palms to catch dinner before IJay flew out of town. Apparently they serve Kobe beef, which I had never had before and had to try. I have had some good steaks, but this stuff is really that amazing. I had a similar "quit talking, I'm enjoying my steak" experience with Graham over in Amsterdam back in May, but this surpassed that by a fair margin. With that done myself and Jim met up with Matt, Jared Akman and Bill Chen, among others, for dinner / drinks at Japonais in the Mirage. Awesome day.

We have some great footage from Vegas and the MvM interviews which I'll try and upload once I get back from Vegas. The internet connection at the house here is pretty weak. HHs from the MvM can again be found here. The CPRG also kept a live blog of MvM events which can be found here. Over the next few days we'll work on turning the MvM page into a media package with footage from the event.

You can discuss this blog here.

"stuck" in vegas until at least wednesday

Date: Sun, Jul 6, 2008 Professional Internet

So I made it through day 1 of the WSOP last night. That's the good news. The bad news is that I am shortstacked, at 10,200 and I would guess avg stack is now about 40k. My day two isnt until wednesday so I guess it will be some golf and hanging out between now and then.

The gamin life expo finishes today and it's been a successful one for stoxpoker. Our booth turned out great and we gave out a ton of sample DVDs and free 24 hour passes, so we are hoping to see some growth in membership from that.

It's been an absolute blast hanging out in vegas with everyone. I've especially enjoyed staying a the stoxpoker house and partying with dusty at his awesome suite. Now I'm looking forward to some golf and a bit slower pace. I do miss my family though, I figure if i bust wednesday I can fly home wed evening, so it's basically a win-win. If I bust i get to go home, if I get through day 2 that would be great also.

ActionBob and Matt Matros have chips heading into day two so I'm hoping for them to go deep.

WSOP Day 1

Date: Sun, Jul 6, 2008 Professional Internet

I played day 1 today at the WSOP main event and had probably the most boring session possible. Nothing much really happened. The biggest pot I won was around 5k and the biggest one I lost was about that size as well. All in all I ended up surviving, but not in great shape with 14,550 chips. Nick also didn’t get very lucky and ended up with 10k. Matros finished day 1 with a nice stack of 65kish. So definitely keep an eye on him. He’s playing well and running well so maybe this will be his week.

I got a shitty table today. There were a bunch of live tourney pros and my edge on them was not significant. There were only 2 donks that I sat with and the rest were at least decent/good. I was really hoping to play some loose passive donks and get a big stack early. But on day 2 I’m just going to have to take what comes my way and hopefully start to get some chips. I can’t push around the table with that measly stack obviously. So as a result all I can hope for is to find a decent spot to get the money in and hope to get lucky.

Anyway, I’m tired and need some sleep. It’s been a long day. Tournaments are a freakin grind. Well, wish me luck and I’ll keep ya guys posted.

Man vs Machine, Day 3: Polaris Wins!

Date: Sun, Jul 6, 2008 Professional Internet

The team of Mark Newhouse and IJay had a net loss of 25BB or so, leaving the record at 2-2-1. The final match will occur tomorrow at 1pm with the team of Hoss_TBF and IJay playing the tiebreaking match. As far as dramatic showdowns go it doesn't get much better than that.

This match was played with a very skewed set of 500 hands. Mark ran super hot with his side of the cards and conversely IJay's side of the cards was super cold. A few CPRG members pointed out that Polaris tends to thrive under these conditions, as it's always 100% rational regardless of the size of the swings. Mark finished up about 125BB while IJay finished down 150BB.

To the best of my knowledge Dusty, Nick and Matt were all still in the running on day 1 of the main event as of about 6pm, we wish them the best of luck.

All HHs from the MvM can now be found here. Please note that Hoss' hole cards will not be displayed on hands he folds, as per his request. We currently have the HHs from the remote matches (including my exhibition match) online and will get the Vegas ones up tomorrow, hopefully.

You can discuss this blog here.

Stoxpoker 4th of july party

Date: Sat, Jul 5, 2008 Professional Internet

So dusty hosted all of us at his palms suite at the fantasy tower last night and it was a blast. Excess was certainly the watchword as the night went on.

I made the standard backdoor exit around 1130 as I play in the ME today, but just got the full report this morning about how the rest of the night went. Ed miller rolled in this morning at whenever and when I asked him if he slept well, the answer of course was no and here's why:

evidently around 2 or so mbolt1 had the brilliant idea to play some poker. Ed declined but was finally convinced to play some blackjack. The initial martingale strategy didnt work, but evidently the final martingale did, culminating in matt and ed syndicating enough to split 77 vs deal 6 and then not being able to double when one of the 7s drew and ace because everyone at the table was out of money. It turns out that the doulbe would have caused them to lose and the dealer used that card to help bust. On to craps. But nobody except ed knew how to play so they asked him how the game works. Ed's explanation: "you just put money down and then roll the dice and they give you more money, but everyone once in a while they take it all." short period of silence, then "allright, let's play!"

The other best line of the night was trying to decide which good looking yet scantily clad women were in fact pros. Geoff Herzog had the perfectly logical and best explanation I've heard... "The pros are the ones that talk to you".....

I'll be interested to see if dusty can make the noon start time for the ME.
