New Office

Date: Fri, Jun 20, 2008 Professional Internet

As of 6:30 this evening I am officially moved into my new place. I am going to post some more pictures and perhaps a video blog if(and this is a big IF) I can get my camera and everything working properly. I am probably a slight dog to get everything working. My plans for the next week are to swim, grind hands, and otherwise relax before my trip to Vegas.

To say it with a southern twang, I ain't been livin' like I should for the last 6 weeks when it comes to diet and exercise. I can definitely tell a difference. I just do not feel as good as I usually do. Hopefully some healthy living this week will prep me for the train wreck that Vegas will take on my body.

Anyways.... Here is a pic of my new office/bedroom. And yes the shark picture was there before I moved in. ;)

Check Me Out!

I want to apologize for the poor audio that occurs on and off for about a minute right around the 2 minute mark. I think what happened is although my cell phone volume was off, a call came in and the microphone picked it up. Sorry about that, but once you get through the 1 minute bad stretch the rest is fine.

I also wanted to talk about a bizarre session I had yesterday. I was busy most of the day and hadn’t played any poker with 8 hours left in my day before I was planning on going to bed. So I decided what the hell I may as well just play all 8 hours. So that is what I did. I ended up playing about 8,100 hands in that session and it was as rocky of a session as I can ever remember. I ran so bad at 5/10 and 10/20 it would make you sick. But lo and behold, I ran like God at 25/50 and won about $25k there in just about 500 hands. I lost like $18k at 5/10 and 10/20 so the end result was about a $7k profit which is pretty darn good for me. I also got tangled up in one of the biggest pots I have ever played. The range of emotions was pretty incredible. When the river came and I still had the stone cold nuts I was absolutely elated. When he flipped over the cards I was feeling pretty meh though. I knew there was some chance we had the same hand, but I was just really hoping we didn’t if you can imagine that…lol. Anyway, here is the hand:

Being Prepared

Date: Fri, Jun 20, 2008 Professional Internet

I actually had a few things I wanted to write about, but I will put them up in the next few days. For now I wanted to talk a little bit about being prepared. I do not personally know Phil Galfond aka OMGClayAiken, but I really learned a good deal from him. I watched an interview a little while back that opened up my eyes, and really helped me with poker and life.

It went something like this...the interviewed asked him what he does better than most people, and what really helps him at the tables. Phil went on to say that most players just sit there, waiting for their opponent to take an action, and then they respond to it. Whereas, instead of just waiting for his opponents action, Phil would think through all the possible actions his opponent could take while his opponent was thinking. This way when his opponent did whatever he was already ready with the play he believed was correct. This preparation allows a player to better think out the best action, and also to not be caught off guard and make mistakes. An added benefit is that the player actually thinks through a lot more scenarios so he also gains more experience in that hand then a player who only sees the one action.

I have taken this and really run with it in my poker game, as well as my life. When I am driving, I think through what people may do and how I will act so as to best avoid accidents. When I play basketball it runs through my head what I will do in whatever situation arises. If I get the ball I will go left if my opponent is not playing tough defense because he saw me go right the last few times. If my teammate shoots the ball, I am going to the opposite side of the rim for the rebound because statistically more rebounds bounce that way. In all these ways I apply it to life, and there are countless examples. I think applying this in poker is extremely helpful and I recommend people try it.

Matt Blogs the WSOP: I Missed the Soccer for This?

Date: Fri, Jun 20, 2008 Professional Internet

I had a very strange and short tournament today in the $1500 No Limit Hold 'Em event.

As I got to the table, the player to my right quickly introduced himself as Carl from Denver. He was one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet at a poker table, he was playing his first-ever WSOP event, he was super excited and nervous, and he clearly didn't know much about hand values. He limped UTG with A4o, put in 700 on an ace-high flop, and didn't blink when calling 1500 on the river on the A226Q board (he chopped with AJ). So when I raised AJo UTG and Carl called in the big blind, I liked the spot. I liked it fine when Carl led out for 200 on the A92 flop. I really liked it when a deuce hit the turn and he check-called my 500 bet. And I loved it when a 3 hit the river and he check-called my 1350 all-in. I loved it right up until Carl rolled over AQ to knock me out. He seemed almost sad to have done it.

So for the first time this Series, I failed to double my starting stack and made an early exit. Oh well, had to happen sometime.

Tomorrow I play the $2,000 Pot Limit Hold 'Em event.

Update

Date: Thu, Jun 19, 2008 Professional Internet

I signed a lease yesterday down here in Puerto Rico. The past week I have been living with my three roommates in a 2 bed 500 square foot hostel. We are a little cramped to say the least. Hopefully, we will be in the place on Friday. We are waiting for it to be cleaned and a leak fixed. After that all we have to do is buy a car and get internet setup and we will be good to go. I am a bit concerned that internet may take a couple of weeks to setup, but there is not much we can do about it if it does. Once I get in my place I will upload some pictures. It is ocean front and at a pretty nice place.

Poker wise I have played some while I have been down here. I am up 18K in 6K hands or so. When I have been on lately I have not found many good holdem games, so I have been playing a lot of PLO. PLO is a lot of fun even with me making pretty huge mistakes. It is a super complex game and I am having a blast playing it.

I am flying out to Vegas the 30th. I am actually dreading the flight. Once I get to LV I am going to have a blast, but traveling is not going to be much fun. I don't think I am going to be playing any events though. I won a seat into the ME, but I think I am going to just take the cash. I see all these guys playing events and doing well and it makes me want to play. But I know how much of a grind these tournaments can be. One summe I am going to move out to Vegas and play a bunch of tournaments and see if I cannot pop one.

I am ready to get settled down into a routine of sorts and grind some hands. I have been traveling since late April and I am ready to chill out for a couple of months. It has been fun, but I am ready to call one place home for 6-8 months.

Thanks Stoxpoker For Thanking Me

Date: Wed, Jun 18, 2008 Professional Internet

I blogged a few days ago about a video that I made which I felt was potentially going to be extremely helpful to the members who watched it. After noticing the thread about this video a couple of hours ago I will have to admit I was a bit taken aback. I had no idea it would be this well received. So I just want to thank everyone who has commented with such kind words and praise in this thread which is less than a half a day old at the time of this writing http://www.stoxpoker.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14394 It always makes you feel good as a coach when you hit a homerun with your students. I think to date, this is probably my most well received video yet and it sure feels good when people take the time to convey just how much they appreciated this video. So once again, THANKS!!!

I have been working hard on my weight and strength lately at the gym and I am starting to see some very real results. I feel better than I have in some time and am clearly getting stronger. I am now 188 pounds (down from 205) and am lifting about 50% more than I was 2 months ago which unfortunately still isn’t saying much….lol. I am also wearing an event monitor for my heart at all times for the next 30 days just as a precaution because I am working out more than I ever have by far since my heart attack. At the end of the 30 days my cardiologist is going to have a better understanding of what my heart is doing which will hopefully be helpful to my situation.

Poker is going well still. So far this month the main difference is that rather than getting that extra 1-2 bad beats per day, I am actually putting an extra bad beat or two on my opponents. This is a huge difference as they are typically all in pots for $2-$4k and being on the good end an extra time or two a day rather than the bad end means a lot of extra money…er…I mean, points…lol. So far I am up 112k points this month and I am very excited about that as I feel my hard work is getting rewarded for the first time in a few months.

My goal was to have played 100k hands for the month by this Sunday and I have a little over 75k hands now so I am about on pace. I will play 8-10 hours every day until I leave for vacation to Stox’s house so that should be enough to get me to 100k hands. Hopefully I can run decently well for that stretch and set myself up for a monster month. My record is $170k for the month so it is pretty farfetched to think I have much of a chance, but you never know. The main thing that I am hoping for is for things to not go poorly. I experienced that for the better part of 3 months and it would mean a lot to me to put together a nice stretch of running well and to continue building confidence.

Back At It

Date: Wed, Jun 18, 2008 Professional Internet

Tonight I head back to Vegas to continue my slew of events at the 2008 World Series of Poker. For this second leg, there's a cool new way to get updates on my status for those who are interested. Go here and create an account. Then after you've done that, sign up for the Stoxpoker channel here. I'll be sending text message updates during every break and you can get them on your phone, in your email, or you can just read them on the web site. Basically, you can get as many or as few updates as you want. And of course, if once-per-tournament updates are enough for you, I'll still be doing my usual WSOP blogging in this space.

I'm sorry I've slacked off on the FTP Fantasy Poker game. At some point I'll try to sit down and enter picks for the rest of the events in order to overtake our current leader "fuzeeke" (who is ranked 94th in the entire game!).

Here's a quick note from WSOP Leg One. During the $2k Limit Hold 'Em event, I logged quite a few hands with eventual champion Daniel Negreanu. (I also logged quite a few hands with David Singer in the Pot Limit event he won, so it feels as though I'm getting closer and closer! Heh.) Daniel was on my left most of the time (lovely, I know), and when I raised his big blind from the small blind he commented in all seriousness that he didn't like that play very much, preferring instead to open-limp from the small blind with most hands in Limit Hold 'Em, assuming a good player in the big blind. Discuss.

And wish me luck in Leg Two.

Personal Finance and INvesting Video

Date: Tue, Jun 17, 2008 Professional Internet

All -

I have promised to make a personal finance and investing video and I wanted to open a thread where I could take questions and comments about the video, before it was completed. Currently, I am only in the brainstorming process, so anything you contribute to THIS thread, might make it's way into the video. I plan on speaking about the following:

1. Bankroll management and my philosophy on it in the framework of overall money management for a poker player

2. Personal spending and budgeting for the poker player

3. financial discipline, spending/saving/investing

4. Credit cards, double edged sword

5. Home/condo/apartment owndership vs renting

6. Mortgage approaches/philosophies

7. Investing approaches
a. market timing/active investing
b. asset allocation (big topic here)/ buckets
c. dollar cost averaging
d. passive investing

8. Taxes (US related)
a. SEP IRA/401k/roth IRA/regular IRA
b. deductions

This is just a very quick list of what I plan to touch on, I'm sure that I will add more to this before completion or make it into a multiple video series.

Time To Grind/ New Highly Requested Video

Date: Tue, Jun 17, 2008 Professional Internet

I have been bumming around watching the US Open the last few days and playing a little poker here and there. My wife and I have been having some fun as well and I was even nice enough to go to Sex and The City movie with her…lol. She owes me big time on that one. Although she went to Rocky AND Rambo with me so maybe we are about even…lol. In any event I need to freakin GRIND the next few days. I have played only about 60k hands or so this month and my wife and I have a 4 day vacation to Stoxtrader’s house in a few days. So my goal is to get to 100k hands on the month by Sunday afternoon when we leave so that way I will be on track. I will have four days after we come back to play before month’s end and I can easily achieve my monthly goal of 125k hands. That’s the plan anyway.

I think you guys are in for a treat in the next few days if you don’t mind me bragging a little about my latest video. I have had many requests from Stoxpoker members who have asked me to make a video where I go to the computer and start from scratch like I do in a normal session. So I started the video off by opening my mental checklist as well as the Poker Stars lobby. I went through my pregame warm up and also through my table selection. It was almost 15 minutes into the video before I played a hand! I also played my usual games which included some 10/20nl in there. I got a little ranty about things, but in a good way I believe. I tried to talk about everything in as great of detail as I knew how and I believe that it could be the type of video that helps some people take their game to the next level. Maybe I am getting a little too pumped about it, but for your sakes, hopefully not. The only downside was that I didn’t get into a ton of tricky spots in the hands themselves, but if nothing else it should illustrate what higher stakes poker is REALLY about anyway. It should be up in a few days and I look forward to hearing your feedback. For those that read my blogs, you guys know that I very rarely talk about videos I make in this way. So I am going to call this one a “can’t miss” video and my hope is that no one is disappointed.

I got some good news today about my heart. I finally got new health insurance. I was on Kaiser Permanente and that insurance is seriously the worst of all time. I can promise you I would have never had a heart attack if I had different insurance my whole life. I came to the hospital 3 times before my heart attack because I had problems and every time they kept brushing me off because of my age. In fact one cardiologist actually wrote in his report that my problems “were likely due to cocaine use.” I have never done anything except weed in my whole life and even the tests showed that I was clean. So needless to say I hate that place.

The hospital I went to today is called OHSU which stands for Oregon Health and Sciences University. OHSU was actually quite pleased to have me in their hospital as they are a research center of sorts and my case is somewhat interesting. The cardiologist I saw was very nice and seemed to genuinely care about helping me out. We came up with a plan and he vowed to once and for all get to the bottom of my problems. I have had arrhythmia for the past 10 years and obviously had my share of problems. No Dr. I have ever known has really done anything to help me get to the bottom of this problem and I feel like I have finally found someone that gives a shit. When he found out that I was at Kaiser the whole time he kind of shook his head and said that, “They do things that benefit their bottom line and not the patient and that is not the way I do things around here.” FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What do ya know, health care that is the way it should be.

I’m pretty sure way back when, being a Dr. meant that you generally had it in you to want to use the mental gift’s that God gave you to help people. Somewhere along the way for some doctors and most people surrounding the industry, it has become a way to make a lot of money and boost your stature at the cost of people’s lives or, if they are lucky enough to live, their quality of life. Pretty sad stuff. I am very excited right now and this could very well be the break I needed that extends my life significantly. I have been waiting for this kind of care for a long time now and if OHSU didn’t meet my standards I was planning on going to wherever the best place on earth is for better care within the next 6 months to a year. The only problem with that is that while it is like $15k to see the best doctors, if they find something wrong that is operable, I might be in for hundreds of thousands more. But you save money for rainy days and if you need heart surgery of some kind then I guess it’s raining so I was prepared for that. Luckily now though it looks like I am going to get the care I need for my $225 a month premiums and whatever office visits cost…boo ya!

Well I better get back to playing if I am going to get all of these hands in. Points wise the month is going very well. I am up about 96k points for the month with the hopes of playing 60k+ more hands by month’s end. So the opportunity exists for me to put up a big month. But I can’t get ahead of myself. All I can control is to make the 60k+ best decisions I can make and whatever the poker God’s decide to give me is what I will get. It might be tragic and it might be beautiful. For now all I can do is hope for the latter.

The first rule about Post Club....

Date: Tue, Jun 17, 2008 Professional Internet

Well it was inevitable. As the prop bet got nearer to the end date of the Stoxpoker coaches meetup in Vegas, things were going to start to get serious.
Several months ago a prop bet occured where several coaches bet $500 a point on who could get the most replies to a post.
For a while Leatherass ran away with it pretty easily, but as the closing date beckons, the thought of a $10,000 payout forced the others into action.
Sure enough, Leatherass pulled out the religion card but Bryce took it into overdrive. The only question that remains is will someone start talking about Hitler before the week is out? (wait, does this count?!?!?)

Oh by the way, Cottonseed and I are having a love child. We're getting married in California next week.

Clearly my rant about the WSOP and how Omaha is better than Hold'em wasn't enough, and if this doesn't work, my last attempt will be how I bite the heads off newborn kittens.

I even run good at running good

Date: Mon, Jun 16, 2008 Professional Internet

So last week was weirdly frustrating. I felt like I was running pretty bad for the most part. Nothing crazy, just the standard suckouts. I did have a few nice rushes though, so by the end of the week my results looked like this:

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

QuickPost

Not bad, I guess, but kinda meh.

A funny thing happens though when the results are shown in $$ instead of BBs:

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

QuickPost

Much better!

This is what happens when you run at -22.3BB/100@50/100, -5.2BB/100@30/60 but +14.4BB/100@100/200. I ran well when it counted, I suppose. [Note: this also shows that 100/200 is WAY softer than those other limits, so you 30/60 winners should definitely give it a shot ;)]

Actually I've been running really well lately -- up over $500k in the last 4 months.

Hopefully the poker gods will continue to smile upon me (I find that ritual sacrtifice usually tends to work . . .)

[btw, if anyone knows of a better way to post graphs please pm me]

This is actually a video blog entry that I'd originally recorded back in December '07 and decided against posting on Stoxpoker, but in light of, oh, some of Dusty's recent posts I figure I can probably get away with it. In fact, in putting something like this up on the internet I almost feel a little bit like I'm preaching to the choir, as I generally find that most people who have spent a fair deal of time drifting around the 'net tend to be fairly courteous when it comes to expressing their own beliefs, quite possibly as the result of being exposed to quite a few different viewpoints over time.

Went out and golfed 9 for father's day with my grandfather and uncle today (my father, the only golfer who happens to know what he's doing, happened to be out of town). My conclusion is that after spending a week at the Kokanee Springs resort doing with most of my focus on golf I've learned just enough to be dangerous. I've been a bit behind with getting Stoxpoker content out to our production team this month and am hoping to bang out a few videos before the whole team heads down to Vegas for the WSOP.

Also, the CPRG has just finished generating their AI for the MvM event. The old Polaris I could beat more or less off the bat for a negligible amount. The new rendition of the old Polaris, which was based on a larger abstract, actually clocked me for a small rate on DIVAT results over a smaller sample, though my graph had started to curve back towards the positive by the end. I'd feel confident that over time I would be able to beat it for a marginal amount. The brand new Polaris is just fucking scary, and, while I'd like to get some more hands in first, is probably the best HU LHE player on the planet.

Basic Observations

Date: Sun, Jun 15, 2008 Professional Internet

1) Most people just pretend to know what mono is, then they say hello by kissing me near my mouth or not realizing they can't drink out of the same cup or something.

2) Ronny Turiaf is the worst player in the NBA, he can't even catch a rebound, he just tips the ball and fouls. Please Phil Jackson, keep him on the bench.

3) People just don't think, I was at a traffic light and the left lane had about 20 cars. About 4-5 cars can make it through on the green arrow. They can just go straight and turn around and save about 5+ minutes on their day even though it is illegal.

4) The world is full of skeptics, most people have no idea that people can make a lot of money in poker. These people have misconceptions and maybe I do not take the time to realize that the reason they do not understand it is just because they either have never played or do not understand the simple math underlying where constant profit comes from.

5) Wii bowling is pretty cool, although I am not very good at it yet.

6) I need to exercise some more to get in good shape instead of sitting in front of the computer for many hours daily.

A New Chase Someday For A REAL thrill?

Date: Sun, Jun 15, 2008 Professional Internet

This may be me writing while in a pretty emotional state of mind after watching what Tiger Woods was able to do on the 72nd hole about an hour or so ago, but it has really got me thinking about some things. For starters I freaking love Tiger Woods. He is just the ultimate person in my mind and to almost anyone, obviously heads and shoulders the greatest golfer that ever played the game. I have always been so inspired by him. I started a folder for my (hopefully) future son on my computer about 6 months ago that is full of articles and you tubes of the most inspirational things I have seen. About half of these things or more are of Tiger Woods. Quite simply put, he is my hero. Here is a clip below that is new and now in my “Son Folder.”

What watching the golf today mainly got me thinking though, was that while I am very happy to be doing what I am doing, I am not TRULY happy the way I would be if I was having this kind of success in golf. I was born to play golf, I believe. It is in my blood. And I have had more people than I could even tell you say those exact words to me. In poker, there is just nothing exciting about it. I can’t really have a glory day. I mean I guess I could win a donkament, but who gives a shit? Oh whoopee I was the biggest luckbox amongst a group of bums for a week. Whoopde fuckingdoo! I can never make something happen the way Tiger did on the final hole today, because in poker you just don’t have control like you do in golf. Is it an accomplishment if I win a flip to win the WSOP? Give me a break. I want to say that I physically stepped up to the challenge and made an important shot. That just isn’t going to happen in poker.

As most of you know from past blogs, I was on the path to great things as a kid. At 13 years old I broke two of Tiger’s records in the same summer. I shot the lowest score in the Junior World Golf Championship history (beat Tiger by one..woohoo!) and I also won more points (you earned them by coming in the top 5 in tournaments) than Tiger did in the Southern California junior golf program at that age. At 15 years old I was the #1 freshman golfer in the country. I kind of peaked a little early and things didn’t go as well as I would’ve hoped for (I still did well though) from ages 16 to 21, but right about that time my fire got rekindled a bit and I was back onto great things. In fact I lead the professional money list for about 9 months in Southern California all the way up to the day I had a heart attack at 23 years old. To date, I haven’t played a competitive round of golf or even had a legitimate practice session.

Looking back, besides the heart attack, there were several things that I wasn’t very good at in golf. The main thing I had going for me is that it was “in my blood.” One way or another I found a way to get the ball in the hole, which often meant getting up and down from places that would make Phil Mickelson jealous. In fact my good friend Kevin Na who is now on the PGA tour always told me that I had the best short game he had ever seen. And Kevin was #2 last year on the PGA Tour in saving par from inside 100 yards! I shot low scores when I was swinging well, but often I wasn’t (by PGA Tour standards anyway). Furthermore I lacked some of the power that is awfully useful these days on tour. I was somewhat of a mental midget at times when the pressure was on. When I was trying to make it out there I was young, without a swing coach, a mental game coach, a person I looked up to who believed in me and I was flat broke living from tourney to tourney.

At this very point in my life I feel as if I could solve every one of those problems that I just mentioned. First of all I am as mentally tough today even at my worst, than I was 4 years ago at my best. I have fallen in love with physical fitness. I have been going to the gym 4 days a week or more and my personal trainer is very pleased with my efforts. I never really rehabilitated my muscles after the heart attack so I started off last month very, very weak. I also have the resources to play in every tournament I need to. I have a solid group of friends as well as a supporting wife and I believe in myself more than I ever have. Lastly, and arguably most importantly, I have the resources to find a swing coach that can help me hit the ball well enough consistently to play out there. Really all I need is to get my ball striking good enough to be in the bottom half of the ball striking rankings. I chip and putt so well that even decent ball striking is good enough for me to compete.

So with all this talk I sound like a guy that is going to quit poker and chase my dream tomorrow to go on the PGA tour…lol. That is not the case. What I want to do is develop a 3-5 year plan (probably 5) that has me chipping away at where I want to be so I can make a serious run at the tour in the near future. In 5 years I can hopefully start to get rid of some of my swing flaws, maybe accumulate enough money to never have to work again, continue to push myself to be in perfect physical condition and with Jared’s help, be the 2nd most mentally tough golfer on earth. I would say first, but overtaking Tiger is impossible.

In poker I set out to be among the best in the world. I feel I have done that in the sense that I have played with the best and have walked away knowing that if you took 6-7 tables off of my screen and threw away my bankroll management skills, I can compete just fine. So that is one goal accomplished as far as I am concerned. I’m sure there are some people that will LOL at what I just said, but I don’t really give a crap and since there never will be a way of ranking people that everyone agrees with, I am content in my mind that I accomplished my goal. I think it is time to set a new one with golf. I could throw caution to the wind and play poker part time starting tomorrow so I could focus on golf if I wanted, but I want to stick with what I am doing for now and begin to chip away at being where I want to be 5 years from now. I want to be ready in that time. Then I can go to poker part time and have enough money to not have to worry about it. Now the ultimate would be if my son got into golf, loved it and was awesome at it. One can only dream at this point though.
